HFT: The Movie
06 March 2013:
High-frequency traders and high-speed algorithmic trading have been blamed for everything from the Flash Crash to the Knight Capital disaster, and now HFT is the subject of an indie film. Acknowledging that she had no idea before she began working on the film that so many trades were decided by algorithms, Camilla Sullivan, director of "Ghost Exchange," tells TABB Group founder and CEO Larry Tabb that the movie is relevant to anyone with a pension plan or a bank account. So what's Sullivan's position on HFT? While technology should be leveraged to drive innovation, she says, capital markets technology has evolved faster than the regulators can handle, and new controls are needed.

Regulation has always lagged the market, because the market get paid to innovate. As Buffett has pointed out, HFT doesnt impact investors. But it does impact day traders, broker/dealers who havent upgraded their tech since their last phone system,, and technology providers selling yesterday's latency. People like Sullivan, with absolutely no experience, are only riding the hype train. This story hasnt changed since floor brokers started using P-91C's on the floor running Black Scholes and the attendant outcry. Same story. Different decade.
